Beckett to Boston

It looks like I can safely go ahead and post what looks to have happened- Peter Gammons and Jayson Stark are reporting that the Red Sox have traded for SP Josh Beckett and 3B Mike Lowell. In return, the Sox are sending top prospects SS Hanley Ramirez and SP Anibal Sanchez to Florida, in addition to a PTBNL.

The Red Sox and Marlins have come to a tentative agreement on a trade that would send Josh Beckett and Mike Lowell to Boston for shortstop Hanley Ramirez, right-handed prospect Anibal Sanchez and a minor-league pitcher.

The deal is contingent on the finalization of paperwork and all players passing physicals, sources outside the Red Sox organization have told ESPN's Peter Gammons.

It is also my humble opinion that whoever engineered this trade, should it finally go through, should be the new Red Sox GM (and Gammons has reported that it was Jed Hoyer and Craig Shipley laying the groundwork).

I loved Hanley, and I loved tracking Anibal. But at the end of the day, when you can get someone like Josh Beckett, you go for it. Minor league prospects can be useful as either cheap, quality talent, or as trade chips. When a guy like this is offered- the latter is the way to go.

Words cannot describe how elated I am to aquire a 25 year old pitcher of Beckett's quality. This is a truly great day for the Sox.
