Jon Papelbon Update

Papelbon had his first truly rough start of the season this past Sunday against the New Britain Rock Cats.

Box from 6.5.03 | 9-12, New Britain (ND)
6 IP, 10 H, 7 R, 4 ER, 2 BB, 5 K, 0 HR

Too many hits, along with being victimized by his defense lead to Papelbon allowing a season high 7 runs, though only 4 were earned. His HRs allowed have gone down as the weather normalizes into summer, and in this appearance, it appears to be- along with a solid 5 Ks- a positive.

3-2, 2.48 ERA, 61.2 IP, 17 ER, 42 H, 17 BB, 53 K, 7 HR

Papelbon has a sparkling 0.94 WHIP, along with a solid 7.62 K/9

Here's the MaineToday.com game recap for Jon's rough outing:

Two of Portland's most reliable pitchers, starter Jon Papelbon and closer Marc Deschenes, had their roughest outings of the year. Papelbon allowed career highs of 10 hits and seven runs, four earned.

"He just wasn't sharp," Sea Dogs Manager Todd Claus said. "He did not have his good command today. He left too many pitches up in the zone."
Papelbon nearly worked out of a couple of jams. With one out in the third, James Tomlin appeared out when he tried to steal second, but his knee banged the ball out of second baseman Dustin Pedroia's glove. Pedroia was charged with an error and the Rock Cats went on to score three unearned runs in the inning.

In the fourth with the bases loaded and no outs, Nieves misplayed Tomlin's deep fly to left into a two-run double. Two more runs followed in the inning.

Papelbon was still in line for the win with the Sea Dogs leading 9-8 heading into the ninth.

New Britain loaded the bases with no outs against Deschenes on a walk, a double by Danny Matienzo and an intentional walk. Deschenes struck out Rick Bell, but Alex Romero sliced a blooping double to left field to drive in two runs before Kennedy hit a sacrifice fly and Tomlin added an RBI double.
