Weekend Games- 4.16.05, 4.17.05

WP- Matt Clement (1-0)
LP- Dewon Brazelton (0-3)
HR- M. Ramirez 2 (GS) (2)

This is the game where Manny really broke out, accounting for all 6 Red Sox runs, hitting 2 HR (his first of the year), on a 2-R job in the 3rd off Brazleton that was an absolute bomb over everything in left, and the second his 18th career grand slam (1st among active players, 3rd all time) off a light tower in the Green Monster.

Clement was definitely solid, falling behind a number of batters, but staying in each count and using his slider really effectively in 2-strike situations. He struck out 7 and gave up only one earned run. He walked only 2 over 7 IP.

The bullpen looked solid again, with Embree going scoreless again and Timlin limiting the Rays to a single earned in garbage time. Good, solid if unspectacular win against an awful, awful team. Seeing Manny crush and admire a loooong HR was a welcome sight, no doubt. No doubt in my mind.

WP- Tim Wakefield (2-0)
LP- Scott Kazmir (0-1)
HR- E. Renteria (2)

This is a game I observed while playing wiffleball on Sunday, a couple spring training outings if you will for Mike and I. Anyway, Wakefield has been very dominating in the outset. Five Ks over 6 IP, and the single run allowed makes for a staff-leading 1.37 ERA. His first inning was most impressive- after allowing Julio Lugo to steal second, creating a runners-on-2nd-and-3rd-with-no-outs scenario, Wakefield got Alex Sanchez to strike out on a high knuckle, Aubrey Huff to pop out to Mirabelli, and Josh Phelps to swing over a low darter ending the threat, none allowed.

The runs came on a really satisfying opposite field solo HR by Renteria off Kazmir, and a slap down the 1B line off the bat of Payton for a 2-R single. Chopper and Sweetness. Gettin it done.

Three scoreless from Mantei, Embree (3 Ks) and Timlin, and a nice Sunday win. The Rays didn't have a hit the final 7 innings. Gives you an idea of what we're working with here.

Of course, the Yankees had the opposite type weekend we did- instead of sweeping, getting swept by Baltimore and falling to 4-8, their worst start in 14 years. They're cellar dwelling with Tampa Bay as we speak, and George is gettin' UPSET!

Monday hosting Toronto on Patriot's Day with Big Curt on the mound.
