Jon Papelbon Update- 4.19.05

Jon Papelbon had a decent week- pitching well despite going only 1-1 in two starts, his loss the first surrendered by the Sea Dogs this season. His line on the season looks as follows:

2005 (thru 4.19.05)
2-1 3.78 ERA, 16.2 IP, 16 H, 7 ER, 5 HR, 0 BB 18 K

The 18 Ks currently put him third in the Eastern League in that category, and his best indicator thus far is his walkless streak running to 16.2 IP. Anytime you have an 18:0 K/BB ratio, you're going to win.

He has been giving up HRs, though. Most have them have been of the solo variety, which is fine- his stuff and results are actually resembling Curt Schilling's more and more every start- great control, lots of strikeouts, and a slightly above average preponderance of home runs. Not the end of the world.

Box from 4.13.05 (W)
5 IP, 6 H, 2 ER, 0 BB, 2 K, 1 HR (W)

Box from 4.18.05 (L)
5.2 IP, 5 H, 3 ER, 0 BB, 9 K, 2 HR (L)

Looks like his next start should be April 23rd against the Harrisburg Senators.

Here's an interesting article on Jon's delivery from Wallball Single, and here's a decent, if a couple weeks old, article from MaineToday.com.
